How to Create an Outdoor Yoga Space

How to Create an Outdoor Yoga Space (no need to overcomplicate it)

Over the years, I’ve practised yoga in many places, from simple terraces in India to quiet corners in the Spanish countryside. And what I’ve learned is this: you don’t need much to create a beautiful outdoor yoga space: a mat, a bit of quiet, and a connection to the natural world around you.

It’s not about creating something (Instagram)perfect. It’s about carving out a spot where you can move, breathe, and listen to yourself, without distractions, and without pressure.

Here’s how I recommend setting up your own outdoor yoga space, whether you’ve got a big garden or just a small balcony

Start with "why"

Before you move any furniture or buy any cushions, take a moment to ask yourself: What do I want from this space?

  • Is it to make yoga part of your daily routine?

  • Is it to spend more time outside?

  • Is it to create a moment of quiet before the day takes over?

Knowing why helps you create a space that feels personal and grounded. But remember it’s not about getting it “right.” It’s about making it work for you.

Find your spot

Look for somewhere with a bit of privacy and some fresh air. Ideally, somewhere flat, not too noisy, and where you won’t be distracted or interrupted.

Here are a few ideas:

  • A patch of grass in a garden

  • A corner of a balcony with a view of the sky

  • A terrace with good light in the morning or evening

  • Even near a window that opens onto nature, if that’s what’s available

You want a place where you feel relaxed enough to move freely and breathe deeply.

Make it comfortable

When making an outdoor yoga space, it’s important to be thinking about comfort as much as atmosphere.

Here’s what I suggest:

  • A thick yoga mat, or a blanket underneath if you’re on a hard surface

  • A cushion or bolster for sitting or lying down

  • A yoga block and strap can be handy

  • A shawl or hoodie nearby if it gets chilly

  • Maybe even a folding chair for some seated poses or breathwork

The more comfortable and supported you feel, the more likely you are to come back to your practice.

Add a touch of your personality

Some people like to create a little altar or focal point. I often do this on retreats, something small that brings intention to the space.

But it doesn’t have to be complicated, you could just place:

  • A candle or incense stick

  • A crystal or smooth stone

  • A plant, flower, or something from your garden

  • A photo, quote, or small statue

Let the nature be part of your practice

One of the best parts of doing yoga outdoors is that nature becomes part of the experience. You might hear birds, feel the sun on your skin, or get a breeze at just the right moment.

Don’t try to block that out, let it in, that’s the beauty of outdoor yoga.

If it’s windy, hold a grounding pose. If the sun is warm, lie down and soak it up in savasana. I always say: let the weather teach you. Some days it’s calm, some days it’s wild, just like us.

Use what you have, and make it your own

Start with what you’ve got. Even a corner of your patio or a fold-out mat on the balcony can work.

The best outdoor yoga spaces aren’t the most beautiful. They’re the ones that have personality.

Over time, it will become a place that feels like your safe haven, a small but powerful spot where you go to take care of yourself.

Yoga was born in nature, not in studios

Yoga was born in nature, not in studios, but under open skies, on the earth, in harmony with the elements.

Many of the postures we practice today are inspired directly by the natural world: the strength of a mountain, the rooted grace of a tree, the fluidity of a cat or a cow, the alertness of a dog, the vision of an eagle.

Creating an outdoor yoga space is a sacred invitation. A gift to yourself.

Not because someone told you to, but because your body, your breath, and your spirit deserve a place to reunite in presence, peace, and deep connection with the Earth.

That’s why I love teaching my yoga classes outdoors whenever possible,  whether it’s during our retreats or even in my online classes, I always try to bring us into close connection with nature.

Because it’s there, in that natural stillness, where we truly come home to ourselves.
